My Story |
I was not always able to eat with enthusiasm. For many years I suffered from stomach aches, gas, bloating, cramps, and random food reactions. I also had acne, allergies, fatigue, poor memory and debilitating neck pain. I considered myself healthy, yet I was frequently ill. I would excuse my ailments with, "it's that bug going around" or "I'm just not getting enough sleep".
Neither my physician or I saw any connections between my symptoms. Interestingly, my life reflected my health: looked okay to everyone else, but inside I was truly "sick" with turmoil and anxiety.
It wasn't until much later - after my dance career ended, after my kids developed allergies, and after having a breakdown at age 33 - that I finally began to look for answers. I called up the professionals... My medical doctor prescribed painkillers, a naturopath recommended dietary changes, and the osteopath said, oddly, "Your liver is full of anger and poisoning you".
I didn't want more drugs, and I was pretty sure I wasn't angry about anything (wrong again, but that's another story). So I tried out the dietary recommendations. They worked! Though only for a while - but that is when I became interested in nutritional healing.
By time I completed my diploma in Natural Nutrition in 2012, I had realized that all health issues have a common root cause - weak digestion! As I worked through case studies, and later with clients, I noticed that significant progress in healing does not occur as long as there is digestive dysfunction.
In other words, if cells are not getting fuel, and the garbage is not taken out, no amount of health food is going to help!
Furthermore, I saw our digestive issues as symbolic of our struggle in life - our choices, our limits, and whether we can let go of what we don't need. Overeating being synonymous with taking in too much of, well, everything! Too much information, too much stimulation, too much thinking, too much stress, too many demands...
As I studied the mind-body connection, I saw that people's symptoms shared similar emotional and mental patterns. For example, many clients with constipation were chronic worriers and also had trouble letting go. So identifying emotional and mental patterns associated with pain and symptoms is an integral part of developing a successful healing program for body, mind and spirit.
Seven years ago, nobody talked about “gut health”. I had trouble convincing people that in order to relieve their symptoms, we had to first address the gut. Certainly, very few were interested in fermented foods! Now, media and scientists everywhere are discussing gut health and our microbiome, and for good reason. As Hippocrates wisely surmised, “All disease begins in the gut”.
So,
... if you are curious about your gut function and how it may be contributing to your health issues, talk to me.
